S1 Math Honors Assignment: The Mathematics Level 2 Subject Test

Check-in 1 on Sept 26th: Our first check-in will be to see that students have completed a minimum of 20 problems towards the semester-long independent honors project. Students may format their work as they chose but all problems will be neat, show all work involved and have a clear solution. Students will receive help on any problems they are challenged by in class or at lunch during office hours. Partial credit is not given for this check-in. Students may find challenging problems from past Math Level 2 Tests online or in the texts in class. Some online sources are: College Board  , Practice Test 1

Check-in 2 on Oct 3rd: Each student was given individual feedback on their first 20 problems during our first check in. Neatness, organization of work, format, difficulty level of problems, sources used were some of things discussed during our one-on-one meeting. Our next check-in is to see the improvement suggestions carried out for five problems (from either the same category or multiple categories depending on how the student has chosen to organize their work). This check-in will be done during class and one-on-one.

Check-in 3 on Oct 17th: Each student was given individual feedback on their first 25 problems during our first and second check-ins. Neatness, organization of work, format, difficulty level of problems, sources used were some of things discussed during our one-on-one meetings. Our next check-in is to see the improvement suggestions carried out for the next set of 25 problems. These problems are from a different category, are challenging and show neat and careful thought.

Honors HW-Coordinate Space Critical Thinking

Check-in on Nov 7th: 25 new problems will be checked on this date. Each student was given individual feedback on their first 50 problems during our first, second and third check-ins. Neatness, organization of work, format, difficulty level of problems, sources used were some of things discussed during our one-on-one meetings. These problems are from a different category, are challenging and show neat and careful thought.

Final Check-in on 12/4/18: This check-in will be to collect all 100 problems from check-ins 1-4, and to hand out the Final Study Guide for the Honors Final (date of honors final: 12/13). Please make sure that all problems are turn-in ready (this means that they are compiled neatly in the same place, numbered and organized).

Honors Final Study Guide included on Classwork Tab. I will also be passing this out in class and giving you time during class to ask questions :) We will do grade check-ins again during the last week of school.

Semester Two:

Literacy in the Math Classroom

     *Read "Rigor Redefined"

           1) Write a one-page response to what you read. How do you feel about the points made in the article? What do you

agree/disagree with and why? What has been your experience with these points in your math career?

           2) Share aloud: We'll use our POTD time next Thursday to do a share-aloud of the information you've read. You'll

share your take-aways with the class and give your opinion on the topic before taking questions. This mini-

presentation will be about 3-5 minutes long.

The Great Mathematician Presentation

*Research one great mathematician (list of mathematicians provided)

                    1.What is their background?

                         *Where/how were they educated?

*What were some of the roadblocks they faced on their way to success?

2.What was their contribution to the field of mathematics?

                         *Works published?

*How did their success influence the field?

*Why are they a celebrated person in mathematics and how has their                                                                                       contribution influenced the field?

*What did their sacrifice and rise mean for the field?

*What does it mean for other mathematicians and for society?

                    3.How is your mathematician inspirational?

*How do you relate to your mathematician?

Present your findings (written paper, song, art piece or poster) and include a photo of your mathematician. Please be prepared to share a little bit about your inspirational mathematician with our class.

Becoming an expert

Chose a topic in Mathematics (provided topics on board) to research and explore. Find out about the following:

*the history-which mathematician(s) is/are credited with being responsible for initial work

*the application: what was your topic first used for and what is it used for now? Who uses it and

      why is it relevant today?

*who contributes to the field through current research?

*provide sample problems and a short explanation of how to work through one problem on the

front board. Have a visual to help explain/support your process.
